St. Lawrence Icon – Catholic Deacon and Martyr on Wood

St. Lawrence Icon – Catholic Deacon and Martyr

Saint Lawrence of Rome, the third-century deacon and martyr, stands at the heart of this radiant scene of steadfast faith. He appears above the gridiron traditionally associated with his martyrdom, while the palm and crown above him signify victory through faithful witness. His open arms express trust in God and the generous service that defined his ministry to the Church and to the poor.

Created for Catholic homes, chapels, parish spaces, and devotional collections, this religious icon offers a focused visual reminder of courage, charity, and fidelity under trial. It is especially meaningful for permanent deacons, candidates for the diaconate, cooks, parish volunteers, and anyone inspired by Saint Lawrence’s example of self-giving service.

Symbolism of Saint Lawrence of Rome

Saint Lawrence was one of the seven deacons of the Church of Rome and is honored as one of the most prominent martyrs of the early Church. Christian tradition remembers him for his responsibility toward the poor and for his fearless witness during persecution. The gridiron identifies him immediately in sacred art, while the martyr’s palm and heavenly crown proclaim that suffering and death do not have the final word.

In this composition, the vivid red dalmatic emphasizes Lawrence’s diaconal ministry and martyrdom. The gold halo identifies his holiness, and the luminous sky draws the eye upward from the instrument of suffering toward the promise of eternal life. Together, these elements make the image suitable for prayer, catechesis, and a deeper reflection on Christian service.

Made in Poland on a Gilded Linden Wood Panel

Each Art Christiana icon is made in Poland on a carefully prepared linden wood panel. The wood is double-primed and embellished with decorative gold leaf before the image is applied using a high-resolution direct-printing process. This combination preserves fine details and luminous color while retaining the warmth and substance of a traditional wooden devotional panel.

The back includes an Art Christiana certificate with the year of production and a secure sawtooth-style hanger, so the icon arrives ready to display. Because every size requires an individual crop, small compositional differences may occur between formats. Screen settings can also affect how colors appear.

Five Sizes for Home, Chapel, or Parish

• 10 × 15 cm — compact size for a desk, shelf, or personal prayer corner
• 15 × 20 cm — versatile format for home devotion
• 20 × 25 cm — balanced size for a wall or small chapel
• 30 × 40 cm — prominent devotional display
• 40 × 50 cm — large-format icon for a parish room, rectory, or community space

The finished wood panel does not require a frame. Its clean edges and gilded surface allow the sacred image to remain the visual focus.

A Meaningful Catholic Gift

A St. Lawrence icon is a thoughtful gift for ordination, a diaconate anniversary, Confirmation, a patron saint feast day, a birthday, or the dedication of a parish ministry. It can also honor someone who serves the Church through charitable work, hospitality, food service, or care for people in need.

Made to order rather than mass-produced, this icon combines durable craftsmanship with the spiritual language of Catholic sacred art. It is intended not merely as decoration, but as a devotional image that encourages prayer and faithful service.
