Who Was St Elizabeth Ann Seton?

St Elizabeth Ann Seton was born Elizabeth Ann Bayley in New York City in 1774. She married William Magee Seton and became the mother of five children. After her husband died in Italy in 1803, she continued her spiritual search and was received into the Catholic Church in 1805.

Education and service to others became an important part of her vocation. In 1809, Elizabeth and her companions settled in Emmitsburg, Maryland, where they established the Sisters of Charity of St Joseph’s, the first community of religious women founded in the United States.

She died in Emmitsburg in 1821 at the age of 46. Pope Paul VI canonized her on September 14, 1975. She became the first native-born citizen of the United States to be declared a saint. Her liturgical memorial is celebrated on January 4.
