Saints Martha and Mary of Bethany — service, listening, and friendship with Christ

Martha and Mary of Bethany appear in the Gospels as sisters of Lazarus and friends of Jesus. Luke 10 places Martha’s active hospitality beside Mary’s attentive listening, while John 11 records both sisters confessing faith amid the grief of their brother’s death.

The Church does not treat the sisters as rivals. Together they reveal complementary dimensions of discipleship: practical service, contemplative attention, honest prayer, and confidence in Christ’s power over death.

Iconography and theological meaning

Mary holds a vessel that recalls anointing and receptive devotion; Martha carries a cross, emphasizing explicit confession and active witness. Above them appears the face of Christ, showing that their different vocations receive unity from the same Lord. The gold field gathers the figures into a theological portrait rather than a domestic genre scene.

For prayer and Christian devotion

This icon is meaningful for siblings, households, hospitality ministries, contemplative communities, caregivers, and people learning to balance prayer with demanding service. It is also appropriate for kitchens, guest houses, retreat centers, and homes dedicated to welcoming others.

Crafted on linden wood in Poland

The image is printed directly onto a double-primed linden wood panel and finished with decorative gold leaf. Each made-to-order piece is produced in Poland, includes a certificate with the year of production, and has a hanger on the back. Natural wood, a luminous gold field, and precise contemporary drawing create sacred art suited to a home prayer corner, chapel, rectory, or a carefully chosen Catholic gift.
