Saint Wilfrid of York Icon
The Saint Wilfrid of York Icon depicts the English saint wearing episcopal vestments, a bishop’s mitre and holding a crozier. The keys refer to his strong connection with Rome and his defense of the authority and traditions of the Western Church. The radiant gold background emphasizes the dignity of his ministry and gives the image a solemn appearance.
Saint Wilfrid of York – bishop, missionary and defender of Church unity
Saint Wilfrid of York was born in Northumbria around AD 633. As a young man, he entered religious life at the monastery of Lindisfarne and later continued his education in France and Rome. After returning to England, he became abbot of the monastery at Ripon and was subsequently appointed Bishop of York.
Wilfrid played an important role at the Synod of Whitby in AD 664, where he supported Roman liturgical customs and the Roman method of calculating the date of Easter. He founded monasteries, built churches and contributed to the development of monastic and liturgical life in Anglo-Saxon England. During his exile, he also carried out missionary work in Sussex and helped spread Christianity among its inhabitants.
Despite imprisonment, exile and repeated conflicts with secular and ecclesiastical authorities, Saint Wilfrid remained faithful to his vocation. His life is associated with perseverance, courage, missionary zeal and commitment to the unity of the Church. He is the patron saint of Ripon and the Roman Catholic Diocese of Middlesbrough. His feast day is celebrated on October 12.
Saint Wilfrid icon on a gilded linden wood panel
The image is created using direct-print technology on a solid linden wood panel that has been primed and hand-gilded with imitation gold leaf. The design is printed directly onto the prepared gilded surface, preserving the clarity of the details and the rich colors of the bishop’s vestments.
The textured gold background reflects light beautifully and gives the Saint Wilfrid of York Icon a refined, traditional character. Natural linden wood provides durability and makes each icon a lasting item for personal devotion.
