Icon of Saint Salome the Myrrhbearer

Saint Salome is named in the Gospel of Mark among the women who followed Jesus in Galilee, witnessed the Crucifixion, and came to the tomb with spices after the Sabbath. Christian tradition commonly identifies her as the mother of the apostles James and John. With the other Myrrhbearers, she became a witness to the empty tomb and to the proclamation of Christ’s Resurrection.

Iconography and spiritual meaning

Salome holds a vessel of myrrh, the defining attribute of the women who came to anoint the body of Jesus. The vessel signifies loving service, courage, and fidelity when the disciples’ hopes appeared defeated. Her composed posture and luminous background direct attention from mourning toward Paschal hope.

For prayer and Christian devotion

The icon is suited to a home prayer corner, chapel, parish room, women’s ministry, or space dedicated to Resurrection prayer. It may accompany prayer for mothers, caregivers, those who serve the sick, and anyone seeking courage after grief. It is also a fitting baptismal, confirmation, Easter, or name-day gift.
