Description
Saint Mary Magdalene — first witness sent to proclaim the Resurrection
The Gospels identify Mary Magdalene as a disciple of Jesus, present at the Crucifixion and burial and among the first at the empty tomb. In John 20, the risen Christ calls her by name and sends her to announce the news to the disciples, which is why Christian tradition honors her as the “apostle to the apostles.” Scripture does not identify her with the unnamed sinful woman of Luke 7.
Iconography and theological meaning
Mary holds a jar of spices, recalling the women who came to anoint Christ’s body, and a red egg associated in later Eastern Christian tradition with her proclamation of the Resurrection. The red color points toward both Christ’s Passion and new life. Her halo and attentive expression present a disciple transformed from grief into a messenger of Easter faith.
For prayer and Christian devotion
This icon is meaningful for converts, evangelists, women in ministry, people named Mary or Magdalene, and anyone seeking hope after grief. It supports prayer for faithful discipleship, freedom from false labels, and courage to announce that Christ is risen.
