This icon portrays Saint Marius as a mature bearded Christian holding a small cross before a gold ground. The cross is the central visible attribute and places the figure within the iconographic type of a martyr. No wife, children, military insignia, episcopal vestments, or identifying place-name appears, so the image should be read with the inscription rather than used to infer details that are not shown.
Western devotion commonly associates Saint Marius with the martyr commemorated alongside Martha, Audifax, and Abachum. A later Passion presents them as a Persian family who came to Rome, cared for persecuted Christians, buried martyrs, and were themselves killed during a third-century persecution. Because the surviving narrative is hagiographic tradition rather than a contemporary record, its detailed chronology should be presented with appropriate caution. The stable devotional core is their witness through works of mercy and fidelity to Christ.
