Saint Lydia of Thyatira Icon – First Christian Convert in Europe
The Saint Lydia of Thyatira Icon, also associated with Lydia of Philippi, depicts the biblical woman holding a cross and a scroll calling believers to proclaim the Gospel. The cross symbolizes her faith and Baptism, while the scroll recalls her contribution to the establishment of the first Christian community in Europe.
Saint Lydia of Thyatira – disciple of Saint Paul
The story of Saint Lydia is recorded in the Acts of the Apostles. She came from Thyatira in Asia Minor but lived in Philippi, an important Roman city in Macedonia. Lydia was a dealer in purple cloth and dye, luxury goods purchased by wealthy and influential customers. She was therefore an independent and successful businesswoman.
During Saint Paul’s second missionary journey, Lydia listened to him preach near a river outside Philippi. Scripture says that the Lord opened her heart to accept Paul’s message. She and the members of her household were baptized, making her the first recorded Christian convert in Europe.
After her Baptism, Lydia invited Paul and his companions to stay in her home. Her hospitality supported their missionary work, and her house became a meeting place for the growing Christian community in Philippi. For this reason, Eastern Christian tradition honors her as Equal-to-the-Apostles.
Patron saint of dyers and textile workers
Because Lydia traded in purple cloth, she is recognized as the patron saint of dyers and people working with fabrics and textiles. Her story also inspires business owners, women entrepreneurs, merchants and those who serve the Church through hospitality.
Saint Lydia is commemorated on August 3 in the Roman Catholic tradition and on May 20 in the Byzantine tradition.
Saint Lydia icon on a gilded linden wood panel
The image is created using direct-print technology on a solid linden wood panel that has been primed and hand-gilded with imitation gold leaf. The design is printed directly onto the prepared gilded surface, preserving the vivid red color of the garments and the clarity of the cross and scroll.
The textured gold background reflects light beautifully and gives the Saint Lydia Icon a traditional, refined appearance. Natural linden wood provides durability and strength.
A meaningful Saint Lydia religious gift
The Saint Lydia of Thyatira Icon is a thoughtful gift for Baptism, Confirmation, a birthday, name day or the opening of a new business. It is especially suitable for someone named Lydia, as well as for a businesswoman, textile worker, designer, seamstress, merchant or person actively involved in a Christian community.
Displayed in a home, office, workshop, church or personal prayer space, the icon recalls an open heart, courageous faith and hospitality placed at the service of the Gospel.
