Saint Luke the Evangelist Icon – Physician and Gospel Writer

Saint Luke is traditionally identified as the author of the third Gospel and the Acts of the Apostles. Saint Paul calls him “the beloved physician” in Colossians 4:14, and the New Testament places him among Paul’s trusted companions. Luke’s Gospel gives particular attention to God’s mercy, the poor, repentant sinners, the work of the Holy Spirit, and the place of the Virgin Mary in the mystery of Christ.

Iconography and the written Gospel

In this icon Saint Luke holds the Gospel book, the attribute of an evangelist and a sign that his service to the Church continues through the proclaimed Word. Christian tradition also remembers him as a painter of sacred images; for this reason he is invoked by iconographers and artists as well as physicians. The gold-toned field emphasizes that the written Gospel leads the viewer beyond the author to Christ, its living center.

For prayer and Christian devotion

This Saint Luke icon is well suited to physicians, nurses, medical students, writers, artists, iconographers, and readers of Scripture. It can accompany prayer for compassion in caring for the sick, fidelity to the Gospel, and wisdom in communicating the faith.

Crafted on linden wood in Poland

The image is printed directly on a double-primed linden wood panel and finished with decorative gold-tone schlagmetal. Each icon is made to order in Poland and includes a metal wall hanger and a certificate marked with the year of production.
