Saint Joseph icon with the Child Jesus and lilies
Saint Joseph holds the Child Jesus and a flowering lily against a gold field. The Child bears a cross-topped orb, a sign of Christ's kingship, and extends his hand in blessing. Joseph's lily is the traditional emblem of purity and faithful guardianship. The composition identifies him not through a narrated episode but through his relationship to Jesus and his vocation within the Holy Family.
The Gospels name Joseph as Mary's husband, a just man, and the legal father who received Jesus into his home, gave him his name, protected mother and Child in the flight to Egypt, and worked as a carpenter. The Catholic Church honors him as Patron of the Universal Church.
