Description
Saint Boniface Icon – Bishop, Missionary, and Martyr
Saint Boniface, born in Anglo-Saxon England around the late seventh century, became one of the most influential missionaries of early medieval Europe. Sent to preach among the German peoples, he worked in close communion with the Bishop of Rome, organized local church life, and founded or supported monasteries that became centers of Christian formation. He was martyred near Dokkum in 754 and is honored as the “Apostle of the Germans.”
Iconography of missionary service
The cross in Saint Boniface’s hand identifies both the Gospel he proclaimed and the cost of Christian discipleship. His raised hand gives a blessing, while his episcopal clothing recalls his ministry as a bishop responsible for teaching, sanctifying, and gathering the Church. The gold-toned background directs attention from historical rank toward the holiness revealed through faithful service and martyrdom.
For prayer and Christian devotion
This Saint Boniface icon is especially fitting for missionaries, clergy, catechists, German Catholic families, and communities praying for renewal of faith in Europe. It can also serve as a patron-saint or ordination gift and as a reminder to unite courage in evangelization with fidelity to the Church.
Crafted on linden wood in Poland
