Saint Benedict of Nursia Icon
Saint Benedict was born at Nursia around 480 and became one of the central figures of Western monasticism. After a period of solitude near Subiaco, he gathered communities and later founded the monastery of Monte Cassino. His Rule organizes common life around prayer, Scripture, work, obedience, hospitality, and careful discernment. Its moderation and practical wisdom shaped generations of Benedictine communities and contributed deeply to European Christian culture. Pope Paul VI proclaimed Benedict patron of Europe in 1964. His principal memorial in the Roman calendar is July 11.
