Saint Anthony of Padua: Franciscan preacher and Doctor of the Church

Saint Anthony of Padua (1195–1231), born in Lisbon, entered religious life as an Augustinian and later joined the Franciscans. Gifted in Scripture and preaching, he taught in Italy and France, defended the faith, and spoke forcefully about conversion, justice, and care for the poor. Canonized less than a year after his death, he was later declared a Doctor of the Church. His widespread patronage of lost things grows from a tradition about the recovery of a valued manuscript.

Iconography and devotional meaning

Anthony holds the Child Jesus, an attribute connected with accounts of a vision in which Christ appeared to him. The lily signifies purity and the integrity expected of a preacher. A book, when present, refers to his learning and mastery of Scripture. Together these elements show a saint whose theological knowledge led toward intimacy with Christ and practical service rather than display.

For prayer and Christian devotion

This icon is appropriate for Franciscan communities, preachers, students of Scripture, people seeking something lost, families caring for the poor, and those named Anthony. It can accompany prayer in a home prayer corner, chapel, parish office, study, or charitable institution and makes a well-grounded Catholic gift for a name day or ordination.

Crafted on linden wood in Poland

Art Christiana makes the icon to order in Poland on a double-primed linden-wood board. The image is applied directly to the prepared surface, enhanced with decorative gold-tone schlagmetal, and protected with varnish. A certificate marked with the year of production and a hanging fixture are fitted on the reverse.
