Description

Saint Andrew the Apostle — the first-called disciple and missionary

Andrew, brother of Simon Peter, was a fisherman from Bethsaida and one of the first disciples to follow Jesus. In John’s Gospel he brings Peter to Christ and later helps present the boy with loaves and fish before the feeding of the multitude. Christian tradition remembers his missionary preaching and martyrdom and venerates him as the First-Called in the Eastern Church.

Iconography and theological meaning

The apostle is shown with mature features and white hair, holding a scroll that signifies the Gospel entrusted to the apostolic witnesses. His sober expression reflects attentive discipleship and readiness for mission. The halo and gold-toned field proclaim that apostolic authority comes from communion with Christ rather than personal prestige.

For prayer and Christian devotion

This Saint Andrew icon is meaningful for fishermen, missionaries, evangelists, clergy, and people named Andrew. It supports prayer for courage to answer Christ’s call, the generosity to bring others to him, and perseverance in proclaiming the Gospel.
