Description
Icon of Saint Anastasia the Great Martyr
Saint Anastasia, traditionally associated with Sirmium, is venerated as an early Christian martyr of the persecutions under Emperor Diocletian. In Eastern Christianity she is known as Pharmakolytria, commonly understood as “Deliverer from Potions” or “Deliverer from Bonds.” Later devotional accounts describe her care for imprisoned Christians; the secure historical record is limited, but her ancient cult is attested in both Eastern and Western Christianity.
Iconography and spiritual meaning
The saint holds a red cross, the established sign of martyrdom and steadfast confession of Christ. Her dignified posture and richly colored garments express spiritual victory rather than suffering alone. The image invites prayer for perseverance, freedom from destructive influences, and faithful compassion toward those who are ill, confined, or burdened.
For prayer and Christian devotion
The icon may be placed in a home prayer corner, chapel, parish room, or care setting. It is a thoughtful baptismal, confirmation, or name-day gift for someone named Anastasia and a devotional image for those seeking her intercession in times of illness, fear, or spiritual trial.
