Saint Alexandra is represented in imperial dress with a jeweled crown, a cross held to her breast, and a halo against a gold field. The crown identifies her royal station, while the cross is the conventional attribute of martyrdom. Together these details correspond to Alexandra the Empress, remembered in Eastern Christian tradition as the wife of Emperor Diocletian and a confessor of Christ.
Church tradition connects Alexandra's conversion with the witness and suffering of Saint George. She openly confessed the Christian faith despite the danger created by Diocletian's persecution and is commemorated on April 23.
