Description
Saint Agnes of Rome — youthful courage and undivided fidelity
Saint Agnes was a young Roman Christian martyred in the early fourth century and honored from antiquity by the Church of Rome. Early witnesses agree on her youth, consecrated faith, and steadfastness under persecution, even though later narratives add details that cannot all be treated as historical. Her feast on January 21 keeps alive a witness in which spiritual maturity was not measured by age.
Iconography and theological meaning
Agnes holds a lamb, her best-known attribute. The lamb recalls innocence, Christ the Lamb of God, and the Latin association between her name and agnus. Her serene face and halo show purity as courageous belonging to Christ rather than fragility, while the gold-toned field proclaims the martyr’s share in heavenly life.
For prayer and Christian devotion
This Saint Agnes icon is meaningful for girls, young women, confirmation candidates, people named Agnes, and anyone praying for purity of heart and courage under pressure. It invites prayer for the dignity and protection of young people and for fidelity in difficult choices.
