Descent of the Holy Spirit and Pentecost
This Pentecost icon presents the fulfillment of Christ's promise of the Holy Spirit. Acts 2 recounts that the disciples were gathered when a sound like a mighty wind filled the house and tongues as of fire rested on each of them. Filled with the Holy Spirit, they began to speak in other languages and proclaimed the works of God. Pentecost marks the Church's public mission to peoples of every language.
Iconography and theological meaning
Mary is shown among the apostles as an image of the praying Church awaiting the promised gift. The descending rays and tongues of fire express the Spirit's action, illumination, and gifts; they are not ordinary flames. A dove may be used in this devotional composition as a familiar symbol of the Holy Spirit drawn from Christ's baptism, even though Acts describes wind and fire at Pentecost. The gathered figures emphasize communion and a mission received together.
