Description
Pope St. John XXIII — pastor of peace and convener of Vatican II
Pope St. John XXIII (Angelo Giuseppe Roncalli, 1881–1963) brought long diplomatic and pastoral experience to the papacy. In 1959 he announced the Second Vatican Council, seeking spiritual renewal and a clearer proclamation of the Gospel to the modern world.
His encyclical Pacem in Terris addressed peace, human rights, and the moral responsibilities of public life during the tension of the Cold War. Remembered for warmth and simplicity, he joined personal kindness with serious ecclesial responsibility.
Iconography and theological meaning
The white papal zucchetto, red vesture, pectoral cross, and pastoral stole identify the Bishop of Rome. His gentle expression reflects the pastoral memory attached to “Good Pope John,” while the halo and gold field distinguish sanctity from celebrity or official portraiture.
For prayer and Christian devotion
This icon belongs naturally in parish offices, seminaries, schools, and homes praying for peace and unity in the Church. It is also appropriate for those studying Catholic social teaching or the history and reception of the Second Vatican Council.
Crafted on linden wood in Poland
The image is printed directly onto a double-primed linden wood panel and finished with decorative gold leaf. Each made-to-order piece is produced in Poland, includes a certificate with the year of production, and has a hanger on the back. Natural wood, a luminous gold field, and precise contemporary drawing create sacred art suited to a home prayer corner, chapel, rectory, or a carefully chosen Catholic gift.
