Our Lady of the Gate of Dawn: the Mother of Mercy of Vilnius

Our Lady of the Gate of Dawn, also known as the Mother of Mercy, is one of the most important Marian images of Lithuania and Poland. The original early-seventeenth-century painting is venerated in the chapel above the Gate of Dawn in Vilnius. For generations, pilgrims have turned to this image in prayers for mercy, protection, healing, and reconciliation. Its place in the city gate also gives the devotion a distinctive character: Mary is honored as a prayerful guardian at the threshold.

Iconography and theological meaning

Unlike most Marian images, Mary is depicted without the Christ Child. Her bowed head and hands crossed over her heart express humility, consent, and interior recollection, recalling both the Annunciation and her contemplation of the mystery of Christ. The double crown, radiant halo, stars, and crescent moon present her as Queen and echo the biblical Woman clothed with the sun, while the title Mother of Mercy keeps the image centered on compassionate intercession.

For prayer and sacred spaces

This icon is especially meaningful in prayers for families, travelers, nations, and people seeking forgiveness or peace. It is suited to a home prayer corner, Marian shrine, chapel, parish office, or as a heritage-rich Catholic gift for those connected with Vilnius, Lithuania, or Poland.

Crafted in Poland

Art Christiana produces the icon in Poland on a carefully prepared linden-wood board. The surface is double-primed, enriched with hand-applied metal leaf, and finished with a direct image-transfer process. A certificate and hanging fixture are fitted on the reverse, and the icon is supplied in a protective presentation box.
