Description
Our Lady of Rokitno, the Patiently Listening Mother of God
The Marian image venerated at Rokitno in western Poland is known as the Patiently Listening Mother of God because Mary's ear is characteristically uncovered and her head inclines as though listening. The sanctuary records that the original was painted on linden wood in the early sixteenth century, reached Rokitno in 1669 and was officially recognized as miraculous by a theological commission in 1670. This reproduction presents the revered image within a richly ornamented devotional frame; it is not the historic original.
An image of attentive prayer and peace
Mary appears alone with lowered eyes, a gently inclined face and an exposed ear. The crown and radiant halo express public veneration, while the dark ornamental surround includes small religious emblems and the White Eagle associated with the image's Polish history. The title encourages attentive prayer and listening to God. It does not imply that the material object hears petitions or guarantees an answer.
For prayer, reconciliation and Polish Catholic heritage
The icon may accompany quiet prayer, examination of conscience and reflection on peace, patience and responsible listening. It is suited to a home prayer corner, chapel or parish setting and may be offered for a wedding, anniversary or house blessing. Its historical associations should lead to prayer for peace rather than national or military triumphalism.
Crafted on linden wood in Poland
Art Christiana makes this icon in Poland on a carefully prepared linden wood board. The surface receives two primer coats, hand-applied metal leaf and a directly transferred image. A certificate and hanging fixture are fitted on the reverse, and the icon arrives in a protective presentation box.
