Our Lady of La Salette in tears
Our Lady of La Salette is depicted seated, her body bent forward and her face covered by her hands. A crown of roses surrounds her head beneath the halo. The composition focuses on Mary's sorrow, without including the two children, the mountain landscape or the later stages of the apparition narrative.
The event and its Church recognition
On September 19, 1846, Mélanie Calvat and Maximin Giraud reported seeing Mary near La Salette in the French Alps. Their account describes her first seated and weeping. In 1851, the Bishop of Grenoble recognized the apparition as worthy of belief. Its message calls for conversion, prayer and respect for Sunday; the image reflects this tradition of reconciliation.
For prayer and examination of conscience
The seated figure can serve as a focus for quiet prayer, especially during a retreat or preparation for the sacrament of Reconciliation. Mary's covered face gives this version a different emphasis from images showing her speaking to the children. The icon recalls the invitation to return to God and offers a visual reference for reflection on Sunday worship and everyday prayer.
