Our Lady of La Salette Icon – The Weeping Virgin Mary

The Our Lady of La Salette Icon depicts the Virgin Mary seated with her face hidden in her hands. Her bowed figure and tears express a mother’s sorrow for people who have turned away from God. The crown of roses surrounding her head refers to the appearance of the “Beautiful Lady” described by the witnesses of the La Salette apparition.

The apparition of Our Lady at La Salette

On September 19, 1846, the Virgin Mary appeared near the village of La Salette-Fallavaux in the French Alps. The witnesses were two young shepherds, Mélanie Calvat and Maximin Giraud. They first saw Mary seated on a stone, weeping with her face resting in her hands.

Our Lady delivered a message calling people to conversion, prayer and penance. She also spoke about respect for the name of God, the importance of Sunday worship and the need to return sincerely to Christ. The apparition was officially approved by the Bishop of Grenoble in 1851.

The message of La Salette is not intended to cause despair. It is a message of hope, mercy and reconciliation. Mary’s tears reveal the concern of a Mother who continues to intercede for her children and desires their return to God.

Our Lady of La Salette – Reconciler of Sinners

Our Lady of La Salette is honored under the title Reconciler of Sinners. Her intercession is sought by people praying for conversion, healing within families, reconciliation, a return to the Sacraments and renewal of faith.

She is especially connected with the Missionaries and Sisters of Our Lady of La Salette, as well as laypeople who share the message of reconciliation. The feast of Our Lady of La Salette is celebrated on September 19.
