Our Lady of Akita icon
This Marian icon presents the distinctive image associated with Our Lady of Akita in Japan: Mary stands with open hands before a cross, her elongated figure recalling the carved wooden statue kept at the Institute of the Handmaids of the Holy Eucharist. The restrained gold and brown palette preserves the sculptural character of the original image rather than treating it as a conventional painted Madonna.
The Akita devotion is connected with events reported by Sister Agnes Sasagawa beginning in 1973. After an extended investigation, Bishop John Shojiro Ito of Niigata permitted veneration of Our Lady of Akita within his diocese in 1984. This careful local context matters: the icon belongs to a modern Catholic Marian devotion, while the bishop's authorization should not be confused with a universal declaration concerning every reported event. The open hands direct attention to prayer, repentance, and Mary's maternal intercession.
