Description
Mother of God, Surety of Sinners icon
The traditional English title "Surety of Sinners" is more precise than the shorter "Help of Sinners." It refers to the Mother of God's intercession before her Son and to an inscription associated with the image. The best-known Odrino form became widely venerated in the nineteenth century and is commemorated on May 29, with additional observances in Orthodox calendars.
The clasped hands and the surrounding inscription
Mary holds Christ at her left side while the Child takes her right hand in both of his. This distinctive gesture resembles a pledge or surety made on behalf of another and gives the icon its name. In this rendering both figures are crowned, and ribbon-like texts surround them. The composition remains Christ-centered: Mary's prayer directs the repentant person toward her Son's mercy.
An icon of repentance and hope
This icon is suited to personal examination of conscience, prayers for reconciliation, recovery from destructive habits and care for someone who has become distant from faith. It belongs naturally in a home prayer corner, confessional chapel or pastoral setting. It should not be used to shame a struggling person or to promise an automatic cure; spiritual support should accompany appropriate professional help.
Crafted on linden wood in Poland
Art Christiana makes this icon in Poland on a carefully prepared linden wood board. The surface receives two primer coats, hand-applied metal leaf and a directly transferred image. A certificate and hanging fixture are fitted on the reverse, and the icon arrives in a protective presentation box.
