Last Supper icon: the Eucharist and communion of the apostles
The Last Supper brings together the Gospel accounts of Jesus’ final meal with the Twelve before his Passion. During this meal Christ identified the bread and wine with his Body and Blood and commanded his disciples to continue this memorial. The scene therefore stands at the heart of Catholic Eucharistic faith. It also recalls the washing of the disciples’ feet in John’s Gospel, where sacramental communion is joined to humble service and the commandment to love one another.
Iconography and theological meaning
Christ occupies the center of the table, surrounded by the apostles. Bread and the cup focus attention on the Eucharist, while the differing gestures and expressions of the disciples suggest questioning, recognition, and the tension created by the announcement of betrayal. The ordered composition presents Christ as both host and gift: the one who gathers the Church and gives himself for its life.
