Christ as the Good Samaritan
The Good Samaritan icon depicts Christ carrying a man who needs help. Its subject draws on Luke 10:25-37, where a Samaritan stops to care for a traveler attacked by robbers. Christian interpretation also sees the Samaritan as a figure of Christ drawing near to wounded humanity. The icon expresses that reading rather than a literal portrait of a character identified as Jesus in the parable.
Christ's cross-inscribed halo distinguishes him from the gray-haired, bearded man in his arms. One arm supports the man's upper body and the other supports his legs; the bare feet and draped clothing make the act of carrying visible. There are no separate scenes of the road, the inn, or the other travelers: the composition concentrates on the encounter between the two figures.
This image can be used in a home prayer corner, a care ministry, or a room where healthcare workers gather for prayer. Its specific theme is practical mercy: noticing another person's need and accepting the work of caring for them. It is also a useful visual companion when reading the Good Samaritan passage.
