Jesus and the Samaritan woman at Jacob's well
Jesus meets the Samaritan woman at Jacob's well near Sychar in John 4:5-42. Tired from his journey, he asks her for a drink. Their conversation moves from water drawn from the well to the living water he offers, then to worship in spirit and truth and his identity as the Messiah. The Gospel does not give the woman a name.
In this composition, Jesus sits to the right in a blue mantle over a light tunic, raising one hand as he speaks. The woman stands to the left beside a tall water jar, with a pale covering over her hair. Stonework, trees, palms and rocks give the encounter a landscape setting. The emphasis is on the two speakers and their attentive exchange, rather than a crowd of witnesses.
The image provides a focus for reading John 4 at home or in a catechetical setting. The woman's questions and her later invitation to the townspeople show how listening can lead to testimony. For someone preparing for baptism, the passage also offers a starting point for considering the difference between physical thirst and the life Christ gives.
