Description
Crowned Iveron Mother of God icon
This image belongs to the Iveron, or Portaitissa, tradition associated with Iveron Monastery on Mount Athos. In church tradition the title Portaitissa means Gate-Keeper and recalls the account that the prototype was found at the monastery gate after the monk Gabriel recovered it from the sea. The crown in this reproduction is a later devotional sign of honor; it should not be confused with the exact appearance of the Athonite prototype.
Iconography and theological meaning
Mary carries the Christ Child and gestures toward him in the Hodegetria pattern, identifying Christ as the Way. The Child raises a hand in blessing and holds a scroll. A visible mark on Mary's cheek recalls the devotional account that the icon was struck and bled; this is presented as church tradition, not as a claim established by art-historical evidence. The crown, jeweled garments and gold ground express honor while leaving Christ at the theological center.
For prayer and Christian devotion
The crowned Iveron icon is suitable for a home prayer corner, chapel, parish room or a Christian gift for a family or new home. It supports Marian prayer that leads toward Christ and should not be treated as a magical guarantee of protection.
Crafted on linden wood in Poland
Art Christiana makes this icon in Poland on a carefully prepared linden wood board. The surface receives two primer coats, hand-applied metal leaf and a directly transferred image. A certificate and hanging fixture are fitted on the reverse, and the icon arrives in a protective presentation box.
