Virgin Mary of Tenderness, the Eleusa type
Eleusa, also written Eleousa, is a Byzantine iconographic type whose name is associated with mercy and tenderness. Mary holds the Christ Child close and their cheeks touch. The pose makes the human affection between Mother and Son visible while confessing that the child she embraces is the incarnate Word. Mary's solemn gaze often introduces a note of contemplation that joins tenderness to the future Passion.
Iconography and theological meaning
In this composition, the close faces and Christ's movement toward his Mother distinguish Eleusa from the more formal Hodegetria type, where Mary primarily points to him as the way. Mary's red mantle and blue garment express the traditional union of human motherhood, royal dignity, and grace; the gold field removes the encounter from ordinary time and signifies divine glory. The image is not merely a sentimental portrait but a meditation on the Incarnation.
For prayer and Christian devotion
The icon is suited to Marian prayer, the rosary, family devotion, and reflection on motherhood, compassion, and the mystery of Christ becoming truly human. It may be given for a baptism or to a family, but it does not promise protection or peace automatically. Christian veneration of Mary remains directed toward her Son.
