The Last Judgment in Christian iconography

The Last Judgment icon gathers the biblical teaching on Christ's return, the resurrection of the dead, and the judgment of humanity. Its central reference is Matthew 25:31-46, where the Son of Man comes in glory and the nations are separated according to their response to those in need. Revelation 20 also contributes the throne, opened books, and the Book of Life. The subject therefore concerns responsibility, mercy, repentance, and the promised triumph of God's justice rather than speculation about dates.

How to read the composition

Christ appears as Judge and Lord, surrounded by angels and the assembly of saints. The ordered registers distinguish heaven, the resurrection, and the separation of the righteous from those who reject communion with God. Such an icon is theological in structure: it combines several scriptural passages in one image and is not intended as a literal map of the end of the world. Its detailed scenes invite careful contemplation of freedom, judgment, and hope.

For prayer and Christian formation

This icon is suited to prayer during Advent, the weeks before Lent, memorial observances, and catechesis on the Creed's confession that Christ will judge the living and the dead. It calls the viewer to conversion and concrete love of neighbor. The image should not be treated as a charm or as a prediction of personal destiny.
