Holy Trinity devotional icon
The Trinity is the central mystery of Christian faith: one God in three distinct Persons, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Christians do not confess three gods, nor three temporary appearances of one Person. The divine Persons are distinct in relationship and wholly share the one divine nature.
Iconography and theological meaning
This composition uses a Western devotional language, showing the Father and the incarnate Son in human form, with the Holy Spirit symbolized by a dove. It is different from the Eastern Hospitality of Abraham type. The dove recalls the Gospel account of Christ's baptism, while the grouping is an artistic aid to contemplation, not a literal portrait of the invisible divine nature.
