The Crucifixion of Jesus Christ
The Crucifixion stands at the center of the Gospel account of Christ's Passion. Jesus was put to death at Golgotha under Pontius Pilate, with the inscription identifying him as King of the Jews. John's Gospel places the Mother of Jesus and the beloved disciple near the cross. Christian faith contemplates here both the reality of Christ's suffering and the self-giving love completed in his death.
Iconography and theological meaning
Christ is shown on the cross with Mary and the beloved disciple standing nearby. The skull at the base refers to Golgotha, the Place of the Skull, and in later tradition also evokes Adam and humanity awaiting redemption. These symbols interpret the biblical event without replacing it. The cross is not presented as a charm, but as the sign of Christ's Paschal sacrifice and victory.
For prayer and Christian devotion
The icon is suited to Lent, Holy Week, Friday prayer, the Stations of the Cross, and personal meditation on forgiveness and faithful love. It can accompany people in suffering without suggesting that pain should be sought or that an image guarantees relief. Christian contemplation of the cross remains joined to the Resurrection.
