Description
The Crucifixion at the heart of the Gospel
The death of Jesus on Calvary is proclaimed in all four Gospels and interpreted by Christians in the light of the Resurrection. John 19 places the Mother of Jesus, the beloved disciple and several women beside the Cross; the Synoptic Gospels also remember the centurion and the women who witnessed the Passion. The icon therefore presents a theological synthesis of the Gospel accounts rather than a literal record of one instant. It is especially suited to prayer during Lent, Holy Week and the Friday commemoration of the Passion.
Christ, the witnesses and Golgotha
Christ occupies the center beneath the INRI inscription. Angels appear above, while the figures below include women in mourning, Mary Magdalene, Saint John and a Roman soldier or centurion-like witness. The skull and rocky opening at the foot of the Cross belong to the traditional Golgotha motif and recall the iconographic association with Adam: Christ’s saving death is shown as reaching the whole human family. The city walls locate the event outside Jerusalem. These symbols invite contemplation; they are not separate promises of protection.
Crafted on linden wood in Poland
Made to order in Poland on a double-primed linden wood panel, the image is printed directly onto the prepared surface and finished with decorative gold-tone metal leaf. A certificate recording the year of production and a wall hanger are included. This is a contemporary devotional icon, not an individually hand-painted work.
For a prayer corner, chapel or memorial setting
This Crucifixion icon is appropriate for a home altar, parish room, chapel, retreat house or memorial space. It supports meditation on sacrifice, repentance, forgiveness and hope in suffering. It can also be given for First Communion, Confirmation, ordination or a bereavement remembrance. Christian use of the image points beyond pain to Christ’s Paschal victory; it does not romanticize suffering or replace pastoral, medical or psychological care.
