Description
The Ascension of the Lord
Acts 1 recounts that the risen Christ instructed the apostles, promised the Holy Spirit, and was lifted from their sight as a cloud received him. Two heavenly messengers then redirected the disciples from passive gazing toward the mission ahead. The Ascension is therefore not simply Christ's departure. It proclaims his exaltation and prepares the Church for witness in the power of the Spirit.
Iconography and theological meaning
In the upper part of the icon, Christ appears in glory within a mandorla borne by angels. Below, the apostles gather around the Virgin Mary. Acts names Mary among the praying community after the Ascension, while her centered place in the icon expresses the Church waiting in faith for Pentecost. The scene holds together heavenly glory and earthly mission: Christ reigns, and the disciples are sent to bear witness.

The icon is suited to the Easter season, the feast of the Ascension, parish catechesis, and personal prayer about Christian hope and responsibility.
