Saint Philip Neri and the life of the Oratory
Saint Philip Neri (1515-1595) made Rome the center of a ministry built around confession, conversation, prayer and service to the poor. Born in Florence, he became known as the Apostle of Rome, guiding people toward a Christian life rooted in the sacraments.
The Congregation of the Oratory received papal approval in 1575. Its origins lay in gatherings for Scripture, spiritual reflection, music and works of charity. Philip's well-known joy was inseparable from this attentive, personal care for others.
The icon shows the white-bearded priest kneeling in ornate red liturgical vestments with his arms extended. Above him appear the Virgin Mary and the Child Jesus; a white lily lies near his knees. The composition emphasizes his priestly prayer and Marian devotion.
