Saint Nicholas, Bishop of Myra
Saint Nicholas was a bishop of Myra in Lycia, in present-day Turkey, and became one of Christianity's most widely venerated saints in both East and West. Although many details of his life survive through later tradition, his enduring ecclesial memory centers on pastoral care, defense of the vulnerable, and discreet generosity to people in need. His relics were transferred to Bari in 1087, strengthening devotion to him across Western Europe.
Miter, crozier, Gospel, and episcopal vestments
This rendering presents Nicholas as a Western bishop. He wears a decorated miter and red vestments with a white pallium marked by black crosses. In his right hand he holds a crozier, the sign of a shepherd entrusted with a flock; in his left is a jeweled Gospel book, identifying teaching and fidelity to Christ's word as the foundation of his ministry. The halo and gold field place his pastoral office within the communion of the saints.
