Saint Narcisa of Jesus, Ecuadorian laywoman and catechist
Narcisa de Jesús Martillo Morán was born in Nobol, Ecuador, in 1832. After her parents died, she supported herself through skilled sewing, served poor and sick neighbors, taught catechism, and pursued an intense life of prayer while remaining a laywoman. She spent her final months with the Dominican community of Patrocinio in Lima and died in 1869. Pope Benedict XVI canonized her in 2008 as a witness to holiness lived through ordinary work, apostolate, and faithful prayer.
