Who was Saint Martin of Tours?
Saint Martin of Tours (c. 316–397) is one of the most beloved saints of Western Christianity. Born in Pannonia, he served as a soldier in the Roman army. His most famous act — cutting his cloak in half to share it with a freezing beggar — remains a timeless symbol of Christian charity. After his baptism, Martin left military service and dedicated his life entirely to God. He became a disciple of Saint Hilary of Poitiers and founded one of the earliest monastic communities in Western Europe.
In 371 he was elected Bishop of Tours, despite his reluctance to accept honors. He became known for his humility, courage and fierce compassion for the poor. Martin evangelized rural populations, confronted injustice and worked tirelessly to strengthen Christian unity. His cult spread rapidly after his death, and he remains a patron saint of charity, the poor, soldiers and workers.
