Description
Mariam Baouardy, Mary of Jesus Crucified
Saint Mariam Baouardy (1846-1878) was born in Abellin in Galilee into a Greek Catholic family. She entered the Discalced Carmelite community at Pau in France and took the name Mary of Jesus Crucified. She later helped establish the Carmel at Bethlehem. Pope Francis canonized her on May 17, 2015.
The cross and her Carmelite vocation
The icon shows Mariam in religious dress, with a white wimple, dark veil and a cross held against her chest. The cross recalls her religious name and her devotion to Christ crucified. Carmelite spirituality places prayer and interior attention to God at the center of daily life; Mariam is also remembered for her devotion to the Holy Spirit.
For personal prayer and Carmelite formation
The image can accompany a home prayer space or a reading group exploring the saints of Carmel and the Christian heritage of the Holy Land. It is a relevant gift for someone drawn to contemplative prayer. Her journey from Galilee to France and back to Bethlehem also gives a concrete historical setting for learning about the Carmelites in the Holy Land.
Made in Poland on linden wood
Art Christiana makes this icon to order on a linden-wood board with two coats of primer. The image is printed directly onto the prepared surface and finished with decorative gold-tone metal leaf (schlagmetal). A certificate bearing the production year and a hanging fixture are attached to the back.
