Description
Saint José Gregorio Hernández, physician of the poor
Saint José Gregorio Hernández Cisneros (1864-1919) was a Venezuelan physician and university teacher born in Isnotú. After medical studies in Caracas and further training in Europe, he taught scientific disciplines including histology, experimental physiology and bacteriology.
His reputation as the physician of the poor arose from treating patients without charge and helping pay for medicines. Prayer and participation in the Eucharist accompanied his professional life. Pope Leo XIV canonized him on October 19, 2025.
The image shows a mustached physician in a white coat, with a stethoscope around his neck and prayer beads in one hand. These visible details bring medical work and personal devotion together. The halo identifies the subject within the language of Catholic sacred art.
Made in Poland on linden wood
Art Christiana makes this icon to order on a linden-wood board with two coats of primer. The image is printed directly onto the prepared surface and finished with decorative gold-tone metal leaf (schlagmetal). A certificate bearing the production year and a hanging fixture are attached to the back.
A fitting patron-themed gift for a physician, nurse, medical student or Venezuelan Catholic family. In a personal prayer space, it recalls service to patients with professional care and concern for those who cannot afford treatment.
