Saint John the Baptist: prophet, forerunner, and witness to Christ
Saint John the Baptist, son of Zechariah and Elizabeth, prepared Israel for the coming of the Messiah by preaching repentance and baptizing in the Jordan. The Gospels identify him as the “voice crying in the wilderness” and show him pointing beyond himself to Jesus, the Lamb of God. John baptized Christ, accepted that his own ministry must decrease as Christ’s increased, and was executed after confronting Herod’s unlawful marriage. His life unites ascetic discipline, moral courage, and joyful recognition of the Savior.
Iconography and theological meaning
John wears the simple garments of the wilderness and carries a cross-staff, which identifies both his prophetic mission and the martyrdom that followed it. His raised hand announces and blesses, while the severe, attentive features recall his call to conversion. The composition presents him not as the center of devotion but as the forerunner whose entire vocation directs the viewer toward Christ.
