Description
Saint John Chrysostom, preacher and Archbishop of Constantinople
John was born at Antioch around 349 and received a strong education in rhetoric before embracing ascetic life and intensive study of Scripture. Ordained a priest, he became one of the ancient Church’s most influential preachers and biblical commentators. The name Chrysostom means Golden-Mouthed and refers to his eloquence. Appointed Archbishop of Constantinople in 397, he preached against luxury, injustice, and neglect of the poor. Conflict with imperial and ecclesiastical authorities led to exile. John died at Comana in 407 while being forced toward a more distant place of banishment.
Gospel book, blessing hand, and cross-marked omophorion
The icon presents John as a bishop in red and gold vestments. A white omophorion marked with crosses lies over his shoulders and identifies his episcopal office. He holds a richly decorated Gospel book close to his chest and forms a blessing gesture with his right hand. These attributes connect preaching with the liturgical and pastoral ministry of a bishop. The image does not show a writing scroll or scenes from his exile; its frontal composition concentrates on the Word proclaimed, the Eucharistic assembly, and responsible church leadership.
For preachers, teachers, clergy, and service to the poor
This Saint John Chrysostom icon is meaningful for bishops, priests, deacons, seminarians, homilists, teachers, biblical scholars, public speakers, and people serving the poor. It can accompany prayer for clear and truthful speech, careful interpretation of Scripture, courage before power, and unity between worship and practical mercy. It suits a church office, sacristy, seminary, classroom, library, home prayer corner, or a gift for ordination, installation in ministry, academic work, preaching service, or a name day.
