Who was Saint Joan of Arc?

Saint Joan of Arc (1412–1431), known as the Maid of Orléans, is one of the most iconic women in Christian and European history. Born into a humble rural family, she began receiving heavenly visions of Saint Michael, Saint Catherine and Saint Margaret as a young teenager. These revelations led her to undertake a mission to save France from destruction during the Hundred Years’ War. Despite having no military training, Joan successfully led French forces, lifted the siege of Orléans and played a decisive role in the coronation of Charles VII.

Her bravery, innocence and absolute trust in divine guidance turned her into a symbol of national hope. Captured by enemy forces, she was unjustly condemned and burned at the stake at just nineteen years old. In 1920 she was canonized by the Catholic Church. Today she is the patron saint of France, soldiers, the persecuted and all who seek strength in times of struggle.
