Saint Jacinta Marto, the youngest shepherd of Fatima
Saint Jacinta Marto (1910-1920) was the youngest of the three children associated with the Marian apparitions at Fatima in 1917. Alongside her brother Francisco and cousin Lucia, she became part of a devotional history centered on prayer, conversion and peace.
The Fatima shrine's accounts emphasize her compassion and prayer for others. She died in Lisbon at nine years old after a serious illness. Pope Francis canonized Jacinta and Francisco at Fatima on May 13, 2017.
The icon portrays her standing among sheep, hands joined in prayer with a rosary hanging between them. Her blue head covering and halo frame the face. The sheep recall her everyday life as a shepherd child, while the rosary points directly to Fatima devotion.
