Description
Saint Irenaeus of Lyon, bishop and Doctor of Unity
Irenaeus was born in Asia Minor around 135 to 140 and in his youth knew the teaching of Bishop Polycarp of Smyrna. By 177 he was a priest in Lyon; after the persecution that killed Bishop Pothinus and many Christians, Irenaeus became bishop of the city. His works Against Heresies and Demonstration of the Apostolic Preaching defended the public apostolic faith against secretive Gnostic systems. In 2022 Pope Francis declared him a Doctor of the Church with the title Doctor of Unity.
Episcopal vestments and the book of teaching
The icon renders Irenaeus in Eastern-style episcopal vestments marked with crosses, holding a richly decorated book. The book represents Scripture and his theological witness to the rule of faith; it is not meant as one particular surviving volume. The image is visually Eastern even though Irenaeus served in Gaul, appropriately recalling his origin in Asia Minor and his role as a bridge between Eastern and Western Christianity. The halo and gold field express his sanctity.
Crafted on linden wood in Poland
Made to order in Poland on a double-primed linden wood panel, with direct printing and decorative gold-tone metal leaf. A certificate with the year of production and a wall hanger are included.

It can accompany prayer for bishops, theologians, catechists and the full communion of Christians, as well as study of the early Church and apostolic tradition. It is a thoughtful gift for a theology student, teacher, priest, ecumenical worker or anyone named Irenaeus who values truth joined to peace and unity.
