Ignatius of Loyola and the Spiritual Exercises
Saint Ignatius of Loyola founded the Society of Jesus with his companions in 1540. A former soldier, he began a different course during his recovery from a wound received in 1521. His Spiritual Exercises became a guide to prayer and discernment, helping people consider their choices in relation to the life and teaching of Christ.
The saint as priest and spiritual guide
This image shows Ignatius in green liturgical vestments, with one hand raised and the other supporting an open book.
