Saint Hyacinth lived in the 12th–13th centuries and belonged to the noble Polish family of Odrowąż. He became one of the first Polish Dominicans after meeting Saint Dominic in Rome. Known for his humility, extraordinary zeal and missionary courage, he founded numerous Dominican monasteries throughout Poland, Ruthenia and regions of today’s Ukraine and Belarus. Many traditions attribute miracles to him, including crossing the Dnieper River on foot and rescuing the Eucharist and a Marian statue from a burning church — a scene often depicted in sacred art. He died in 1257 in Kraków, and his cult spread rapidly across Europe. Today he is venerated as the patron saint of Poland, Silesia, missionaries, refugees and those facing difficult decisions.
