Hannah is the biblical woman whose prayer opens the story of Samuel. Distressed by childlessness and by humiliation within her household, she prayed silently at the sanctuary in Shiloh and made a vow to dedicate a son to the Lord. Eli initially misunderstood her, then blessed her petition. After Samuel’s birth and weaning, Hannah brought him to serve at the sanctuary and prayed the hymn of thanksgiving in 1 Samuel 2. Her story is about honest prayer, a received gift, and the difficult freedom to entrust that gift back to God.
