Saint Gregory the Great, pope and teacher of pastors
Saint Gregory the Great (c. 540-604) served as pope from 590 to 604. Before entering monastic life, he held public office in Rome. His experience of administration later served a Church facing poverty, political insecurity and the practical needs of the city.
His Pastoral Rule explains the responsibilities of spiritual leadership: a pastor must live what he teaches and adapt his guidance to the people entrusted to him. Gregory also left homilies, letters and a major commentary on the Book of Job. He is honored as a Doctor of the Church.
The image presents him in red vestments, wearing a mitre and holding an ornate crozier. His raised hand makes a blessing gesture. The episcopal attributes express the office of shepherd; they are a devotional portrayal rather than a historical costume study.
