Saint George icon with the dragon
Saint George appears as a mounted soldier in armor, directing his spear toward the dragon while an angel descends with a crown of victory. The rescued maiden and the walled city complete the later hagiographic scene. In Christian iconography the dragon is not a zoological claim: it gives visible form to evil defeated through faithfulness to Christ, while the crown identifies George first of all as a martyr.
The historical core of his cult is the witness of a Christian soldier venerated as a martyr in the early fourth century, traditionally under Emperor Diocletian. The dragon episode belongs to later legend and became the saint's most recognizable visual cycle. This distinction preserves both history and the meaning of the image. A Saint George icon is especially appropriate for prayer for courage, fidelity, and protection from moral evil, and as a patronal gift for a person, parish, military chaplaincy, or scouting community bearing his name.
